Hal Masover

Hal Masover
Senior Partner, Iowa Progressive Asset Management

From real estate, to commodities, to portfolio planning, Hal's entire professional career has been one of value investing in tangible assets with strong cash flows.

At IPAM we stand for appropriate investment diversification outside the stock market.  What sets Hal and the other professional consultants of FWG apart from most other investment professionals is that they have the depth of experience with directly investing in tangible, hard, assets ("stuff") in addition to "paper" assets such as stocks and bonds.

Hal began as a professional real estate investor. A Graduate of Penn State, Hal began as a professional Real Estate investor in Madison, Wisconsin in 1978.  Successfully cashing out of those investments by 1986, Hal moved to Iowa and began to invest his real estate profits.

Hal "wrote the book" on "Value Investing in Commodity Futures", John Wiley & Sons, NY (now translated into several languages including Chinese).  Hal's next venture was to found a commodity trading firm.  The experience led him to write his well-regarded book.  During this tenure he formulated two key elements of his investment philosophy.  First, adhere to "value Investing" : maximize one's upside potential by seeking what's undervalued (be it Real Estate, Commodities,Bonds or Blue Chip Stocks).  Second, employ true investment diversification through alternative asset classes, particularly those based on tangible, hard assets that can also yield cash flow.

Hal co-founded Iowa Progressive Asset Management with his partner, Stuart Valentine, in 2000.  Hal and the other investment professionals at IPAM provide securities and investments with particular focus on diversification that includes both alternative and traditional investing.  IPAM has rapidly expanded and serves a clientele of independent-minded, sophisticated investors who are located all over the United States.  Securities are offered through our independent Broker/Dealer, Financial West Group.  IPAM is a member of the Progressive Asset Management (PAM) network which supports Socially Responsible Investing (SRI) by helping clients align their investing to not conflict with their particular social or environmental values.

Hal is a well known expert on alternative investing.

  • He is a frequently invited speaker at investor shows.
  • He has written numerous articles for investment and trading publications.
  • He is an oft-quoted interview subject on radio and in financial newsletters.

Hal has been married 30 years and has two teenage sons.  His wife, Joan, works with him as IPAM's Senior Portfolio Specialist. Hal is an avid basketball player and golfer.

Financial Advisor

Senior Partner, Iowa Progressive Asset Management

At IPAM we stand for appropriate investment diversification outside the stock market. Our depth of experience with directly investing in tangible, hard assets (stuff in addition to paper assets such as stocks and bonds) is what sets Stuart and the other professional consultants of FWG apart from most other investment professionals.

Stuart entered the business world at age 14 as an apprentice to a master chef. Seven years later this led to the launching of Chez Chez which is still lively in the Seattle gourmet circuit. After a year at the University of Madrid in Spain in 1978/79, Stuart graduated from Evergreen State College with a degree in renewable energy policy studies in 1982.

With a foundation in Energy Markets and an MBA earned in 1986 from MUM, Stuart entered the world of commodity futures trading, ultimately founding Crown Futures Corp. in 1991 with his partner, Hal Masover. Stuart credits his years in commodities for developing a strong understanding of global capital and natural resource markets. This includes a deep appreciation and a natural comfort in working with asset classes beyond traditional stocks and bonds, particularly in the renewable energy sector.

Stuart co-founded Iowa Progressive Asset Management with his partner, Hal Masover in 2000. Stuart and the other professionals at IPAM provide securities and investments with particular focus on diversification that includes both alternative and traditional investing. IPAM has rapidly expanded and serves a clientele of independent-minded, sophisticated investors located throughout the United States and Europe. Securities are offered through independent Broker/Dealer, Financial West Group. IPAM is a member of the Progressive Asset Management (PAM) network, an industry leader of Socially Responsible Investing (SRI) strategies. The PAM network provides clients the knowledge and support to align their investment strategy with their particular social environmental values.

Joan Masover

Joan Masover
Financial Advisor

Joan's expertise is seeing the "big picture" for each client and building customized portfolios. These may blend alternative and traditional investing for broader diversification and reduced market risk.

At IPAM we stand for appropriate investment diversification outside the stock market. Our depth of experience with directly investing in tangible, hard, assets ("stuff" in addition to "paper" assets such as stocks and bonds) is what sets us apart from most other investment professionals.

Joan's original training is in the hard sciences where she developed critical thinking skills for discerning pseudo-science from real science. She graduated from Knox College with a degree in Biology. She credits this scientific background for helping her distinguish today between pseudo-finance (flawed financial strategies) and real finance (reality based strategies). She likes investments that are tangible and based on hard assets, and she likes investments that pay dividends.

Joan has worked in financial services for 10 years. Her favorite business activity is creating personalized, holistic portfolio designs.

Joan is an expert in Socially Responsible Investing (SRI). IPAM is an affiliate of Progressive Asset Management (PAM). This national network of 65 Reps has been providing Socially Responsible Investing brokerage services since 1987. Its purpose is to help individuals and institutions invest in line with their values AND in line with their financial goals. Joan was the 2002 recipient of the Iowa Sierra Club's business service award.

Joan has been a frequent speaker on investing at numerous venues including finance seminars, college and high school finance courses, cruise ships, NAIC conventions, and environmental expos. She spoke at The Money Show, which featured Louis Rukeyser, in Las Vegas in May, 2002. The topic was "Choosing Investments for Bull & Bear Markets".

Joan has written articles and opinion pieces on investing for newspapers and magazines in Iowa and Missouri, including the Des Moines Register, the Fairfield Ledger, the Iowa Source, and the Healthy Planet (published in St. Louis). She also created educational pieces specifically for employees of a local nonprofit, including one called "Don't Let Your Inheritance Jeopardize Your Child's Scholarship". (copy on request)

About your broker

Jim Comey

From real estate, to commodities, to portfolio planning, Jim's entire career has been one of value investing in tangible assets with strong cash flows.

At IPAM we stand for appropriate investment diversification outside the stock market.   What sets Jim and the other professional consultants of FWG apart from most other investment professionals is that they have the depth of experience with directly investing in tangible, hard, assets ("stuff") in addition to "paper" assets such as stocks and bonds.

Jim is fully registered with FWG for securities and investments as a Registered Representative.  He is also Series 3 licensed for commodity futures although that license is not active with IPAM/FWG.  Having been with IPAM since 2003, he has become deeply steeped in the IPAM investment philosophy.  It's an approach that emphasizes suitable inclusion of alternative investing, particularly for investors that seek returns and preservation of capital beyond the traditional asset classes of stocks and bonds for a portion of their portfolios.

Functioning also as IPAM's marketing director, Jim is the person at IPAM most responsible for the strategic vision of the company, including its special emphasis on bringing wider investment diversification to high-net-worth investors.

Prior to joining IPAM, Jim's background included a highly successful sales and marketing position involving large ticket sales that required a high level of client service.

As a successful head-hunter for eleven years, Jim learned how important it is to listen and attend to the personal values, including life and career goals, of highly professional job seekers in order to ensure a good long-term job fit.  This is a process not unlike fitting investing to the personal needs of investors.

Other experience includes teaching and computer sales.

Jim graduated with a BA degree with honors from the University of Massachusetts at Amherst in 1975.

Jim is the proud father of 2 daughters.

Outside interests:  Scholarship fundraiser for a local school, a youth soccer coach, the captain of an ice hockey team, and drummer for a local band
